Route through Rascafría (Circular through the Angostura Valley)

Route Location

This route is located in the Angostura Valley, next to the Lozoya Valley. Although we talk about a route of just over 17km it is neither long nor difficult to undertake. It is simply an easy route.

Surround the road that goes up to the Cotos Port and transit along the Lozoya river among others. Route recommended and landscaping speaking one pass.

Starting from the Island restaurant

We start from the La Isla restaurant, a restaurant on the rise to Port of Cotos from Rascafría on the left. The route begins next to Lozoya river or of the Angostura, ascending next to the Lozoya river, this one always to our left.

This place is a wooded area of ​​the most beautiful and bucolic of Guadarrama, ideal for a light hiking trip or just a morning excursion.

Leaving the restaurants behind you will reach a beautiful waterfall that forms the call Pradillo Dam, a jump that seems to be in the middle of a jungle due to the vegetation that lies around this place. Above it, a haven of peace water, since people hardly walk if you go first thing in the morning.

Through the Angostura Valley

As you ascend a path that gradually joins a wide dirt road that cars do not travel. The environment is full of waterfalls and small waterfalls, even on the other side of the road that goes up to Cotos, since in the middle of the route you have to crossing to continue heading for the slopes of Peñalara.

Keep in mind that part of the crossing, on the left bank, is along a wide dirt road surrounded by tall pines and abundant ferns. It is not all path, but it is not lacking either, since the views are always grateful.

Towards the Umbrian stream

With hardly any difficulty, once you cross the road that goes up to Cotos, you go up a forest path until you reach a small bald spot where a path appears that goes towards Scratching and towards him forest guard monument. The descent is along a cobbled path where you have to go down with caution. You have to be very careful not to get lost, because before taking this path there is a wide path that goes to the area of ​​the Puerto del Reventón to the left. Do not take it, take the one that goes down the center.

Halfway we found a small lagoon full of frogs, a lagoon so hidden that we could only find it when listening to croaking frogs. Leaving the downhill path it joins with a forest track. Subsequently, without any loss, in a few kilometers it is left behind to take a turn to the right towards the parking lot and the monument of the forest ranger.

Once the detour is taken as 20 or 30 minutes later, the monument is reached, where the views towards the Lozoya Valley are magnificent. Apart from that, it is a perfect place to rest and take the last meters towards the car, since it is about 10 minutes from the starting point.

How to get?

To make this route you have to leave the restaurant from the restaurant, located between Rascafría and the Port of Cotos, at kilometer 31 of the M-604.

  • Long pants, thermal shirt and fleece

In winter the routes are usually longer if there is snow, so calculate 1 or 2h more.


In summer this point of the mountains is usually very dry and very hot. For the material we recommend:

  • Summer shoes, short if possible
  • Shorts and short sleeve t-shirt
  • Polarized sunglasses and cap
  • Solar protection
  • Water in quantity and food, which will be 5 hours of crossing
