Central Park in the fall, and why not? When this time full of yellowish landscapes and with fallen leaves, we rarely think of a scenario like a park, since normally our memories only think of large forests, mountain landscapes or beech trees where we can find some Habitat. But thinking about New York, and a park surrounded by buildings may become incompatible with that concept we call autumn, which by the way, is our favorite period.

They say that in Central Park they inhabit almost 300 different varieties of birds and more than 250,000 trees, including spectacular American elms, hundred maples and imposing oaks. If we add to this several lakes and hidden paths among millions of leaves, they make an ideal forest that particularly in autumn shows all its greatness.

Central Park in autumn (between ocher and gold)

The time we visit New York in the fall, we not only get two good impressions of the city. The perfect temperature to visit it and the ocher and gold color of maples and oaks in Central Park, an image that we will remember all our lives.

Of the 8 days we were in New York during this last fall, we twice toured Central Park, which says little, since we are talking about an extension with more than 340 hectares, huge! The first time raining, in total solitude, with the single whisper of the leaves falling and the singing of the birds.

Central Park in the rain

In Central Park in autumn and raining it is easy to discover the absolute loneliness. It is something that when you visit a big city like New York, it is appreciated between so much car and people running from one place to another.

In the rain we enter several paths on the south side of Central Park, through a thick forest of maples and oaks, with those colors that sometimes you only see is the american movies that develop in forests where nobody seems to be able to live.

Shrubs, small streams and best of all, a path or a road buried by millions of fallen leaves by the magical autumn of New York. There were times when so much water fell that we had to shelter under some huge elm, an imposing tree and one of the "kings" of Central Park.

The rain was no problem, the brightness of the water on the leaves or the smell of wet earth are enough incentives to discover something beyond the asphalt jungle that is New York.

Central Park under the sun

As in any city and especially in northern Europe, when the sun rises the streets fill up and life illuminates the streets again. Central Park is filled with runners and of people walking. There are people feeding the pigeons, musicians playing their best repertoire and tourists with rental bicycles.

The funny thing is that the same paths we walked in solitude and in the rain retained the same essence. These paths are so deep that it is hard to find life beyond trees, birds and squirrels jumping from tree to tree. It's funny, but people prefer to walk along the main roads or on the paved roads to walk along those leafy paths. He autumn color and the spirit of nature is everywhere in Central Park, since you look where you look, in autumn, there are always those ocher and gold colors.

Where to sleep in New York?

Those were the hotels we used on our last visit to New York. They were a success despite being located outside of Manhattan:

  • The Fifth Inn suites in Brooklyn. Comfortable hotel and only 5 minutes from the subway. Spacious rooms with Internet and breakfast included
  • Ramada Queens Hotel in Queens very close to the subway and just 20 minutes from Manhattan. Internet included and separate breakfast
  • Room Mate Grace. Next to Times Square and with exquisite decoration

Hotels that we recommended and that we could not enjoy. I recommend you book in advance when you are in Manhattan.

  • Broadway Hotel Located in a quiet area west of Central Park
  • Belnord Hotel. Located in the same area as the previous hotel and near the Museum of Natural Sciences
  • Eurostars Wall Street. In the financial district and very close to the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge

One option is to rent an apartment. Remember that the owners have to accept you and send a confirmation. Unfortunately there have been cases of cancellations by the owners several days in advance so I recommend booking on a hotel website with the right to cancel just in case.
