As in many countries in Europe, Germany is a land of castles and a good example is theNeuschwanstein Castle which is possibly the most famous of them all. For this reason, thousands of tourists visit it all year round, either in the warmer months or in the cold winter. It is at that moment when the landscapes are dyed white and the Neuschwanstein is dressed in icicles.

Route to the mad king's castle (Neuschwanstein - Germany)

Visit to Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau

Years ago we visited the Neuschwanstein Castle in winter. I still remember how the train took us to Fussen since Munich I was pushing large amounts of snow. The castle was beautiful, but many of its accesses were closed by ice or even its mountains advanced by avalanches. This left me a little thorn and years later I decided to return in Autumn, the prettiest station to visit the Neuschwanstein or El Rey del Madillo as it is also known.

Neuschwanstein Castle tickets

The first thing we did was book tickets online. Something fundamental if we want to enter at a specific time, since the visits are strictly guided. In fact in summer it is possible for one to remain without entering. At least in Autumn I observed that there were still tickets for the last hours of the day, yes, if you wait more than 1 hour in line at the ticket office. Internet tickets have preferential access and the wait is null.

The tickets are divided into several packages depending on what we want to visit:

  • Castle of Neuschwanstein
  • Castle of Hohenschwangau
  • Museum of the Bavarian kings

You can buy the ticket individually or through a combination of 2 or 3 visits. The castles separately leave for just over € 13 and about € 11 the museum. If we opt for all three, it leaves for something more 30€. We opted for the castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein.

Visit to Neuschwanstein Castle - Hohenschwangau Castle

Visit Hohenschwangau Castle

He hohenschwangau castle It was the first one we visited. A day before we had toured the area unaruta to the castle of the crazy king through the mountains, a route of the most spectacular and that left us views like this.

As it happens in the visit to the castle of Neuschwanstein, the castle ofHohenschwangau It is also governed by a rigid and guided schedule. In fact there are some lathes at the door that prevent you from entering if your ticket is associated with a different time.

Visit to Neuschwanstein Castle - Hohenschwangau Castle

Nor can you take pictures inside so we can not show details, a shame. Inside we can see emblems with the famous Bavarian lion and the Prussian eagle. Rooms with exquisite paintings and of course we can see even where the last king of Bavaria slept.

Visit to Neuschwanstein Castle - Hohenschwangau Castle

Everything is adorned with oak and cherry furniture, handcrafted. Silver could not be missing in a castle of kings as well as a dance hall and celebrations. Of all this, perhaps the most curious detail was the room that the king had for the composerRichard Wagner. The reason was not only for the love of King Louis II's music, but they both had a little adventure.

Visit to Neuschwanstein Castle

He Neuschwanstein Castle We visited in the afternoon. Just when there is less influx of tourists and when the cold makes an appearance. Like Hohenschwangau Castle, we have to wait behind some lathes until our time comes.

Visit to Neuschwanstein Castle

The wait becomes enjoyable because from its entrance there are great views towards the mountains and the bridge from where the typical photo of the castle is taken. The bridge is in fact located above a waterfall and there are occasions that have to stop the number of people crossing it.

Visit to Neuschwanstein Castle

From the Neuschwanstein Castle to the bridge there are about 10 minutes walking. Therefore it is recommended to go 1 hour before the visit but we want to be waiting at the door or in the village.

Route to the mad king's castle (Neuschwanstein - Germany)

The visit is spectacular, but I keep the views that are seen from the nearby mountains. Views that few people know but really worth doing.

As in the previous case, photographs are prohibited inside. A much nicer interior than Hohenschwangau, despite the modern and rough appearance it appears. Inside it highlights the throne room and its murals, the room of the singers and the bedroom of the king.

Neuschwanstein surroundings

The area gives a lot to give. To start where Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are located there are several lakes, each one more beautiful. Some of them are even navigable by a romantic boat.

Visit to Neuschwanstein Castle

There are two main lakes, the Alpsee and the Schwan or Swan Lake. The first is reached immediately from Hohenschwangau. The other we have to do a smooth hiking trail of more than 45 minutes.

Visit to Neuschwanstein Castle

In the middle of the two castles there is a road surrounded by restaurants and souvenir shops. The prices are high, but we always find something moderately affordable like a hot dog.

Visit to Neuschwanstein Castle

If we are longer, I recommend visiting Fussen or even crossing the nearby Austrian to see more castle or even places as interesting as the Highline179.
