Route through the Taft point and Sentinel Dome

Everyone who visits Yosemite knows that the number of visitors is very high. It's hard to find a route without people, especially in Yosemite Valley. The reason is simple, the park is wonderful and is very close to the San Francisco Bay Area, less than 4 hours.

Knowing this, we have to get to the idea and most of the time it is best to get up early, although this depends on the route, as we are going to comment today. This has three advantages, the first is to easily find a parking space. The second is to start the day with cool temperatures, since at noon it is usually unbearable heat. And finally, walk with few people. It is curious to see how most people start the routes relatively late, between 10 and 12, just when the sun hits well.

It is best to start around 8 in the morning. The sun has begun to enter the valley and the light reflected in the mountains is spectacular. But of course, there are always exceptions like today. The reason is simple. The valley is oriented of West to east, so it is advisable to make the northern routes such as Upper and Lower Yosemite falls in the morning, and in the afternoon the Taft Point + Sentinel Dome, ... Suffice it to say for those who visit the glacier point (South-West) in the morning You will find a very rich front sun.

Taft point and Sentinel Dome

Taft point and Sentinel Dome are located in the Yosemite Valley, on the road that goes up to the Glacier point. In fact, just a couple of kilometers before reaching Glacier Point, there is a parking lot to the left from where the route starts.

Having a south orientation within the valley, it is best to do it in the afternoon, or better yet, three hours before nightfall. In this way we can see one of the most wonderful shows of Yosemite, when the sun is reflected in the Half dome and the light crosses the valley where the Mirror lake.

With the advice learned, we left the car in the Taft point car park around 4/5 in the afternoon of a month of May. A place with few places and that in most of the times there is no choice but to leave the car lying on the sides of the road if there is no space.

From there we take the path that goes to the left and is very well signposted. Until the Taft point we have 1.5 miles or less, by a road surrounded by trees and with little slope. It travels fast, only slowed by the streams grown by the thaw and where from time to time you have to get around a snowfield.

The moment we leave the forest behind, we will see in the background the Taft point, about 500m. This part is lowered to the same precipice that falls into the void towards the Yosemite Valley. When you arrive at the Taft point you do not expect a security fence and spectacular views of the upper fall. Not so of the Half Dome that is covered by a mountain.

If we look to our left we will see part of the captain, which encourages continue walking close to the cliff until you see spectacular views of it. One pass without a doubt.

Pleasant with such a good view, we return to the parking lot until 1km before we will turn left towards the Sentinel Dome. It can be said that if we had continued straight we could also have arrived, but the ideal is to make it parallel Yosemite Valley.

The reason is this, the views as always. The upper fall It will accompany us all the way, although later on we will have to overcome a strong slope. Of course, the Sentinel Dome will see it almost on its four sides, most of them suitable only for climbing and which we will have to turn almost completely.

After a strong ramp, we reach the turnoff between the Sentinel Dome and the Glacier point. We turn right towards the latter and begin to climb tirelessly until 5/10 minutes later we reach the top of the Sentinel Dome, where there were barely 2 people.

There was barely 1 hour left to dusk and the sky was quite cloudy. Even so, I decided to wait, while a storm was approaching. 30 minutes later, the sun went down below the clouds and their rays penetrated the valley of the Mirror Lake, leaving the Half Dome in full light. A whole show.

Even with light, we decided to return to the parking lot, going down the same path to give a signal that marked to the right. The last rays of light peeked through the trees, light that in Yosemite is especially magical.

In a matter of 10/15 minutes we return to the parking lot, when the storm hit us. A top 10 excursion like most of those in Yosemite.

When to visit Yosemite National Park?

Since the beginning of May the road to Glacier Point is usually open. Therefore, to make this route it is strictly necessary that the road is open.

The routes from the Yosemite Valley are very hard

The answer is a NO resounding There are for all levels and most are excellently documented so that nobody gets a surprise. If we have to talk about some demanding route, these would be the one that goes up to the Upper Yosemite Fall and from there to Yosemite Point or surroundings.

What does it cost to enter Yosemite

The cost of access to Yosemite National Park is 30$ and is billed per vehicle. This pass is valid for 7 consecutive days.

How to get to Yosemite

The ideal is to arrive by car to travel it to our pleasure. Even so, there is a free internal bus service and some public transport option to arrive from cities like San Francisco. Here for example you can take a bus to Merced withAmtrak and from there another to Yosemite.

Where to sleep?

Be careful with this point because we can take a dislike. Yosemite is the most visited national park in the United States, so staying here can be a headache if we don't book months in advance. In my case, I tried to book a cabin a month and a half in advance and it was impossible, with the tent being the only option, or going to a hotel in Butterfly an hour from the valley, since he was not willing to pay for a room the chilling amount of 300$

Outside of Yosemite you can also sleep in the portal, just 5 minutes from the entrance. Prices are generally high and their occupancy high.

He camping It is the most economical option and without a doubt the one that will best integrate us with the park. To reserve a place just go to theYosemite National Park website. and its cost is usually 26$ by store However there is a camping series that no reservation required and access is only cut once they are filled. These campsites are:

  • Camp 4 : Located at the base of the captain and ideal for climbing. Located in the Yosemite Valley.
  • Bridalveil Creek : closed in winter to be located on the road that goes up to the Glacier Point view.
  • Tamarack Flat / White Wold / Porcupine Flat / Tuolumne Meadows : located on the Tioga road, therefore closed for much of the year.
  • Yosemite view lodge: hotel of great proportions at the gates of Yosemite. Despite its size it is recommended to book.

If we camp for free on a multi-day route, we must take a permit that costs about 5$.

Another option is the cabins, which are really large tents with a multitude of amenities, many of them optional such as TV, heating, ..., etc. for a higher cost than 100$ night.

And of course, there is always the hotel option, mainly in Yosemite Village But the prices are really high.

Guided tours to Yosemite

If we don't have time we can always opt for a guided tour to Yosemite where we will see the main points.
