Every September 8th the procession and the festivity that many call as the "brunette" is celebrated, a virgin who in 1434 was found by a Frenchman and thanks to him we have an enclave in a place as spectacular as the Peña de Francia.

Visit La Peña de Francia

"Ascending" the mountain

Touring the villages surrounding the Pool we could not leave behind one of the most emblematic places in the area and the province of Salamanca, the Rock of France. With its more than 1,700m high we knew that in winter it used to be snowy, and not only that, that it could even be inaccessible. We talked about the end of March, month where the winter begins to pale but with this climate change anything you can find.

We ascend to the Rock of France by the SA-203 road after taking a detour in the Asador el Casarito. From below, white points were already perceived, points that indicated that there was snow, but not enough to cut the road.

In high season the top parking usually collapses, but being a weekend outside the high season we only found two cars, so the beginning of the visit was quiet and almost alone.

At the top it usually does a lot wind and cold, so you should wear warm clothes

The lodge and the Sanctuary

Already at the top, you walk about 200m from the parking lot to the lodge and the sanctuary. He sanctuary de la Peña de Francia is a complex that includes a small convent, a Gothic church, a small square and a beautiful viewpoint towards the Sierra de Bejar.

Part of the square is found buried by snow and beneath it we discover several accesses and a corridor that were frozen and acting as an exit to one of the mountain slopes.

The church is very simple, without great boasting, but it impresses only to think how they have come to build such a building in a place like this. Without means at that time, neither cars nor trucks to carry the material to be able to build it.

The place of worship of the virgin is at the highest point of the mountain, where long queues are usually mounted especially in Easter.

Next to the sanctuary is the famous Hospedería Peña de Francia, one of the highest-rise hotels in Spain. It is a rustic hotel with all kinds of services and with some unique views.

Next to the lodge, and in large part of the mountain, it is easy to see copies of mountain goat, in addition to the imposing repeater that serves much of the province of Salamanca.
