We have climbed the Nevada Head on many occasions, especially in winter, but we had never done the route to Cabeza Nevada from Navalperal de Tormes. A little longer than the previous one, with the incentive to explore unknown landscapes of the Sierra de Gredos.

Nevada head in winter

Route to the Nevada Head from Navalperal de Tormes in Gredos

The route to the Nevada Head (2426m) or Mogota del Cervunal from Navalperal de Tormes is a long and somewhat demanding task. In summer the temperatures are high and the shadow shines for its absence in much of the way. For a route of more than 20 kilometers and more than 1300 meters of unevenness, good planning is important. They are between 7 and 8 hours away, with water halfway and a small shelter where we could even spend the night. This by the way very close to a lagoon that has been almost dry since mid-June.

Route to the Nevada Head from Navalperal

The route starts from a parking lot located in Navalperal de Tormes in the Sierra de Gredos (Ávila). It is marked as the five lagoons and there is space for 30/40 vehicles. It can be filled, although it is not frequent. The majority of the people who park here are because they make a 5-lagoon laruta, they are fishermen, people who come to cool off in the river and on some rare occasion to go to the Laguna Grande de Gredos.

The route to Cabeza Nevada is not signaled from the parking lot, so you should take a map or GPS. On the way there are indications, but never to this mountain. However, part of the trail is in good condition, except for the rocky area that we have found since 2000 meters, more or less past a refuge.

After leaving the parking lot and crossing a bridge over thetormes river, we turn right along the marked path. We climb a small slope until we find a Stone house and we end up crossing another river, the Gredos throat where there are some pools where to bathe.

Crossing the river we will walk along a narrow shadow path with the gorge of Gredos gorge on our left. If we need water it is a good point to collect it since we will not find more water again after several kilometers. By the way, on this path we see in the background the Nevada Head still far away.

We will cross the stream again (third bridge) and end at a crossroads where there are several signs. Laguna Grande and five lagoons, but none at Nevada Head. It is here where we turn to the five lagoons and past barely 10/15 meters If I remember correctly, there is a path on our left that begins to climb zigzag. Let's take it.

Nevada Head from Navalperal de Tormes

We begin to climb the zig-zag between bushes and piornos, with a well trodden path and with some abandoned plastic tape of some race…. something sadly common in the Sierra de Gredos.

Once on top of the first hill we will see another one that we have to climb and behind it we will have another and another one. Therefore do not despair, the road is monotonous but it is gaining incentives as we approach the snowy head.

On the way we will pass through an interesting marble streak, very white and that looks like snow from afar. Then we will arrive at a stream where the road becomes more annoying when it runs along a river (on our left) and ending in an interesting valley where there is a shelter (Cervunal cabin).

From here the road is non-existent and you have to look carefully for the milestones to follow the right path, which is not always easy. We lost it on the way but on the way back we found it easily. In any case, we charted a route that didn't go bad for us.

With the snowy head already on our feet, we have the hardest part. That where we have to look for life to overcome an endless number of annoying rocks that do not facilitate the path. Even so the views are very good and this bad drink becomes very light.

After this we will reach the top, which seems a little higher than the top of the snowy head, but once we get to this we will see that it is a few meters higher. We are already in the snowy head summit and we have uploaded it from Navalperal.

From here the views are very good. You can see perfectly part of the circus of the five lagoons on our right and on the left the large lagoon. In the middle of the Galana, the Almanzor,….

Already back, although we could do it in a circular way if we go down the circus of the five lagoons, we decided to return by the same route. Of course, we took the opportunity to see how yellow was the Sierra de Gredos (June) with many of its flowering piornos.

Practical data

When to go

It is not a complicated mountain so you can visit all year, especially without snow. In winter there are good plates of ice and hard snow that will force us to carry crampons and ice ax.

How to go to the Navalperal de Tormes car park

If we come from Hoyos del Espino, when we pass through Navalperal we must cross it until the end until we see the sign of “path of the five lagoons”. This will cause us to cross the entire town in the opposite direction. In the end the street will start down until you find a road that will leave us in the same parking lot.

Tips

Long route that should be early to make it. In summer the sun hits very hard and the noon hours are very hard.

Seasonal tips

Winter

  • Long pants, thermal shirt and fleece
  • Hat and gloves
  • Primaloft if you are cold
  • Raincoat or third layer for wind or rain
  • Long boots and winter socks
  • Crampons and ice ax.
  • Helmet
  • Rope for the final section.
  • Flashlight or frontal. The Black Diamond for example are excellent
  • Leggings if there is snow. Here is a good example of Leggings and eye with size.
  • Backpack of at least 30l
  • Trekking sticks
  • Map/GPS. Without this, don't even show up. As a GPS, our recommendation is Garmin GPS 64

In winter the routes are usually longer if there is snow, so calculate 1 or 2h more.

Summer

In summer this point of the mountains is usually very dry and very hot. For the material we recommend

  • Long pants recommended. There are annoying piornos in the area….
  • Polarized sunglasses and cap
  • Solar protection
  • Water in quantity and food.
  • Map / GPS
